Jaap Blonk comes to HIVE on April 21st

In collaboration with HIVE, Poetry Gabriola, is pleased to bring one of the most unique vocal performers in the world this Saturday!



Jaap Blonk is a vocalist, composer, performer and poet.
He is known for his unique powerful stage presence and almost childlike freedom in improvisation, combined with an original sense of form and structure. Blonk is a pioneer in the arena of sound poetry and his ability to transform the human voice and its expression is unparalleled. For over 40 years he has performed around the world in many contexts and his use of live electronics extend the scope and range of his concerts and collaborations.

He has collaborated with musicians and ensembles in the field of contemporary and improvised music throughout he the world. Maja Ratkje, Mats Gustafsson, Joan La Barbara, The Ex, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Ebony Band. He premiered several compositions by the German composer Carola Bauckholt, including a piece for voice and orchestra. A solo voice piece was commissioned by the Donaueschinger Musiktage. Blonk's work for radio and television includes several commissioned radio plays.
He also makes larger-scale drawings of his scores, as well as visual poetry, which is being exhibited.He has his own record label, Kontrans, of over 25 releases.
