November 6

READ ALOUD LIKE A PRO WITH JOËLLE ANTHONY

Presented in conjunction with the Gabriola Arts Council

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore vocal warm-ups, relaxation techniques, breathing, and diction. Learn to choose which passages from your own books and poetry to read aloud at events, and how to edit for clarity and brevity. We will also discuss how reading one’s work aloud prior to publication improves the writing. Ideal for anyone who reads aloud for an audience. Bring something to read aloud.

Time: 10 – 11am
Place: The Commons

HOW TO HAIKU WITH NAOMI Beth WAKAN

Presented in conjunction with the Gabriola Arts Council

A one-hour workshop that will explore what this smallest of poetry forms is all about.  Catching the moment in three intense lines is perhaps the hardest thing to do in poetry, but by the end of the hour, you will be able to do just that.  Naomi Beth Wakan, author of Haiku-one breath poetry, will introduce you to what makes a haiku and how to write one.  Join Naomi and catch a zen moment on the page.

Workshop: Empowering Fiction with Richard Van Camp

Richard Van Camp is a proud member of the Dogrib (Tlicho) Nation from Fort Smith, NWT, and a nationally acclaimed storyteller and writer. This interactive, small class is a rare opportunity to work closely with Richard, exploring the notion of Empowering Fiction. Topics will include respect for life, having a positive influence, and the medicine power of animals.

Limit of 12 participants so register early at 247-7604.

Workshop: Storytelling School with Ivan Coyote

A Gabriola favorite, Ivan Coyote is one of Canada’s most captivating storytellers. This small, interactive workshop offers a rare opportunity to work with Ivan on what makes a good story and how to craft that story into something worth telling.

Partnerships that Prime the Poetry Pump


This year we have created a number of events in the days leading up to the festival as a way to get everyone’s creative juices flowing.We have partnered with several groups to Prime The Poetry Pump with workshops, elementary school presentations,  and special events in Vancouver and Nanaimo.

OCTOBER 19

CANADA SPEAKS IN VANCOUVER

Poetry Gabriola is proud to partner with the Vancouver International Readers and Writers Festival at a special VIRWF event on October 19, at 8:00pm, at the Revue Stage on Granville Island. Poetry Gabriola Artistic Director Hilary Peach will host Out Loud At Night, an evening featuring three of the Canada Speaks new works: Richard Van Camp, Cheryl L'Hirondelle and Ivan Coyote,  as well as Victoria spoken-word sensation Sasha Langford. CANADA SPEAKS IN NANAIMO

An Evening with Evalyn Parry & Richard Van Camp

Presented by WordStorm and Poetry Gabriola

Join multidisciplinary creator/performer Evalyn Parry and nationally acclaimed storyteller Richard Van Camp for a night of poignant, outrageous, and innovative literary performance.

NOVEMBER 9 – 12

GABRIOLA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS:

Presented in partnership with the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN)

Poetry Gabriola is proud to present four phenomenal artists who will showcase their work and talk about their craft with students attending the Gabriola Elementary School: 

Victor Anthony

Singer/songwriter Victor Anthony will present a one-hour program on traditional songs from the American South. He'll talk about the music and the instruments as well as perform the pieces on guitar, banjo and mandolin. Suitable for grades 6 and 7.

Dinah D

Co-founder of the hit children’s band The Kerplunks, Dinah D (with her friend juggler/comedien Clever Trevor) will present an hour of music, rhythm, and storytelling. Suitable for all grades.

Richard Van Camp

Internationally renowned Dogrib Nation storyteller and best-selling author, Richard Van Camp, will share hilarious and empowering stories about respect for life, having a positive influence, and the medicine power of animals. Suitable for all grades.

Robert Priest

Best known as CBC’s Dr Poetry, Robert Priest will present a set of highly entertaining and topical poems and songs that includes an interactive component and time for questions and answers. Suitable for all grades.


NOVEMBER 13 AND 14

Speed Dating With The Canada Council

If you are an artist with a project and you would like to discuss it with a Canada Council representative, now is your chance. Writing and Publishing program officer Paul Seesequasis will be in residence at the Dragon’s Lodge over the festival weekend, and we are arranging 10-minute SPEED DATING sessions for Paul on November 13 and 14, between 10:30 and 12:30am.
