The Poetry Yurt it is a unique cultural space, intended primarily for non-profit artistic, cultural and community activities. It is nestled in a grove of trees on the Gabriola Commons grounds, 675 North Road, Gabriola.

The Poetry Yurt is primarily a workspace for artists to research and create new projects — to support artistic development, with a focus on process rather than a commercial end product.

Though the Poetry Yurt’s main role is as an arts and cultural venue, it has also functioned as workshop space, classroom, meeting room, installation space and rehearsal studio.

Description

The Yurt is 8.5m (28 ft) in diameter. The floor area of about 56 sq m (600 sq ft) is tiled with sprung, dance-friendly wood. The fire occupancy limit is 30 people. It is heated in winter with a wood stove. Wifi is available.

There is ample parking with direct access to the Yurt, which is wheelchair accessible via a grass path, boardwalk and French doors.

Rental

The Poetry Yurt can be rented by the hour or the day. Preference is given to arts and culture uses, but the Yurt is also available to individuals and organizations for meetings and events.

The rate is $20 per hour (one-time rental), or $15 per hour (for 2 or more repeating rentals, booked together), or $80 per day.

Allowed use

Note that our MOU with the Gabriola Commons forbids “commercial use,” so only certain types of rentals are permitted. Activities which involve attendance fees or retail sales may not be allowed. Typical Yurt uses are workshops, readings, rehearsal or performance space, cultural activities, and meetings.

If you have questions, contact a Yurt Steward. In all cases, rental is at the discretion of the PGS board, and may be refused without reason. The Poetry Gabriola Society is not liable for any mishaps or injuries that may occur during Yurt rental.
